Drive and Weave (Sep 5 - September 26, 2026)
Gameplay Video

Drive and Weave is an endless runner game. The player directs the car while it moves automatically. The goal is to travel the farthest distance without hitting any cars.

The project is made in Unity, and I am the solo developer of the game; I mainly focused on creating the gameplay loop and making it functional. All other tasks included creating the main menu and implementing essential assets to make the project whole.

My goal for the project was to promote simplicity in the game. Creating an endless runner fit the profile of the type of project I aimed for.

Originally, the initial game idea was about managing cars at a dealership based on real-life experiences. It became too complex to pull off as a solo developer. It led me to decide to narrow down the scope to build something more manageable.

I enjoy endless runners due to them improving a player's reaction time and coordination in a fast-paced game.

The game is finished until further updates are developed.

Level Design

When ideating the level, I wanted the environment to be on city roads. Specifically, highway roads, since that's where most weaving through traffic occurs.

Making the road a straight line helps make the control scheme simple since the player will move right automatically. Adding invisible walls prevents the player from leaving the road.

I wanted to give players the idea that they're driving on a highway road, and the camera angle helps give them a scenic view of the city environment while playing. The road that the player drives on sits next to highways and is above city roads, similar to their real-life counterparts.

I made the camera angle specifically shown in the gameplay video to give players a proper visual of where the cars are to better anticipate how to avoid them.

Gameplay Design

The player moves using the up/down arrow keys or W/S keys, while the car moves automatically. Adjusting the speed values during testing allowed for better optimization of the player movement

Cars continually spawn as obstacles that the player must avoid. They only appear at a distance away from the player's position to ensure that there is enough room to execute evasive maneuvers in-game.

Whenever the player collides with any car obstacles, the player restarts the game. It keeps the game going without end so players can aim for the high score.
